— The reality of month one

Suddenly your hands are covered in bite marks.
There’s accidents all over the carpet.
You’re losing sleep because of the crying.
And beneath all of it sits that horrible little thought:
You don’t need to spend your puppy’s first year constantly wondering what you should be doing next.
There is a much clearer way through it.
— Twelve months from today

01
Your dog sees another dog and stays connected with you.
02
You can walk without being dragged down the road.
03
You call them and genuinely expect them to come back.
04
They understand how to switch off at home instead of demanding your attention every waking minute.
05
You can take them to a café, a pub, on holiday, to see friends or simply enjoy a quiet walk without everything becoming an event.
06
You trust them with more freedom because they’ve earned it.
That’s the dog we’re working towards throughout the Perfect Puppy Course.
Who is teaching you
I’m Will Atherton, a clinical canine behaviourist, and I’ve spent my career working with dogs and the people who love them.
Over the years I’ve worked with everything from straightforward puppy problems through to serious behavioural cases.
And one thing became very clear to me.
So many of the issues owners struggle with later in life begin with small decisions made during those first few months.
— What you are building

01
Build calmness, independence and structure so your puppy learns that life doesn’t have to be constant entertainment.

02
Build engagement and loose-lead skills progressively rather than waiting until pulling has become a well-practised habit.

03
Develop the relationship, engagement and training progression needed to make coming back to you worthwhile — even as the world becomes more distracting.

04
Teach your puppy to experience dogs, people, places, noises and environments calmly rather than growing up believing they need to interact with everything they see.

05
Use clear communication, obedience, boundaries and follow-through to remove the constant negotiation from everyday life.

06
Become someone your puppy trusts, listens to and enjoys working with — while still giving them all the affection, play and adventure that made you want a dog in the first place.
— Why a roadmap
When you’re raising your first puppy, you don’t know what you don’t know.
01
You might not realise that allowing your puppy to greet every dog could make loose-lead walking and neutrality harder later.
02
You might not know that too much freedom can contribute to chewing, toilet accidents and an inability to settle.
03
You might think adolescence means your training has suddenly stopped working.
That’s the dog we’re working towards throughout the Perfect Puppy Course.
The Perfect Puppy Course guides you through the journey in order, showing you what matters now, what you’re preparing for next, and how the decisions you make today affect the dog you’ll be living with months from now.
— The first-year roadmap

06
Towards your adult dog
Turn puppy skills into reliable everyday behaviour and build the standards you want to carry into adulthood.
— Real training, real puppies
Dog training makes far more sense when you can watch the process.
That’s why the Perfect Puppy Course combines my latest theory and methodology with extensive practical training footage.
You’ll follow my journey raising my own German Shepherd puppy, Reggie, because seeing a puppy develop over time is incredibly valuable.
But you’ll also see my assistant trainers Ben and Holly working with different puppies, giving you more examples of how the same principles can look with different dogs, personalities and challenges.

You’ll see the repetitions.
The adjustments.
The mistakes.
The moments where the puppy doesn’t immediately understand.
And the progression afterwards.
Because your puppy isn’t a perfectly rehearsed demonstration dog either.
Real Perfect Puppy owners

You’ll have lifetime access, so you can revisit training whenever you need it rather than trying to memorise everything at once.
Also included
We’ve built a collection of additional resources around the main course to make it easier to put what you’re learning into practice.
And you get all nine when you join.

Bonus 01
Watch a real initial crate-training session and see how I introduce the crate-tap method, build understanding and begin helping a puppy settle.
Ideal for those first days when you need practical help immediately.

Bonus 02
Follow my first month with Reggie and see how the principles inside the course show up during normal everyday puppy life.
You’ll see the decisions, challenges, progress and reality of raising a puppy day by day.

Bonus 03
Use this practical checklist to broaden your puppy’s experiences while keeping the real goal in mind: a calm, confident dog capable of being around the world without needing to interact with everything in it.

Bonus 04
When puppyhood feels like there are a hundred things to remember, these visual roadmaps bring you straight back to what matters.
See where you are, what you’re working towards and what should come next.

Bonus 05
Turn the course into a plan you can follow week by week.
Your printable companion helps you organise training through the first weeks, months and eventually the first year, while giving you a simple way to monitor progress across obedience, manners and socialisation.

Bonus 06
Find the training you need without hunting through the course.
Biting?
Recall?
Crate problems?
Pulling?
Adolescence?
The Course Navigator shows you exactly where to go when you need help with a particular skill or puppy problem.

Bonus 07
Sit in on real coaching sessions from the Will Atherton Canine Centre.
Watch genuine puppies and genuine owners being coached through their training, and see how I assess what is happening, what I change and what I ask the owner to work on.
It’s the closest thing to standing beside me during a private puppy session.

Bonus 08
See how obedience develops through real training sessions.
These additional examples give you more opportunities to watch the skills from the main programme being trained, practised and progressed with real puppies.
Because seeing another repetition often makes the difference between understanding the idea and understanding how to actually do it.

Bonus 09
See how obedience develops through real training sessions.
One of the easiest thoughts to have while watching a dog trainer is:
“That works for them… but will it work with my puppy?”
So we’ve added more practical examples with different WA Academy trainers and different puppies. You get to see how experienced trainers read the dog in front of them, make adjustments and apply the same underlying principles across different personalities.

When you join the Perfect Puppy Course, you’ll also receive 30 days free access to the Perfect Puppy Club.
Because sometimes you’ve watched the lesson, started practising… and then your puppy does something you weren’t expecting.
The Club gives you an additional layer of support while you begin putting the training into practice and building those first foundations.
It’s a community of likeminded owners where you can get help directly from the WA Academy team, ask questions and receive direct feedback.

You don’t have to take my word for it.
Is this you?
You’ve just brought your puppy home and want to start properly.
You’re preparing for a puppy and want to know what to do before they arrive.
You already feel like biting, crying, toileting or chaos is starting to take over.
— A note from Will
Every time they pull and reach the thing they wanted, they’ve learned something.
Every time they ignore a cue and nothing happens, they’ve learned something.
Every time excitement around another dog is rehearsed, they’ve learned something.
And every time you calmly guide them, reward the right choice, hold a boundary or practise an important skill, they’re learning too.
You don’t need to produce a perfect puppy overnight.
You need to make enough good decisions, consistently enough, that the dog in front of you keeps moving in the right direction.
That is exactly what I want the Perfect Puppy Course to help you do.
A year from now, your puppy will be a year older regardless. Let’s make sure you’re proud of the dog they’re becoming.

Questions
Ideally, you can begin from the moment your puppy comes home. If your puppy is already a little older, that’s absolutely fine. Start with the foundations and progress from there.
Yes. Plenty of owners join because biting, pulling, crate problems, overexcitement or poor recall have already begun. The course helps you address those behaviours while strengthening the foundations underneath them.
Absolutely. The course is designed to help you understand both what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, so you can become more confident as your puppy develops.
No. Puppies develop at different rates. The course gives you a clear progression while teaching you to work with the puppy in front of you.
Yes. Your puppy’s breed and individual temperament will influence how you train and progress, but the core principles around learning, communication, obedience, manners and socialisation apply across breeds.
